2025 Description of Classes & Schedule
Water Safe!  Water Smart!

If you are interested in reserving spots for your child(ren) for the upcoming 2025 Summer Swim season, please read the descriptions of the levels I am offering, and ‘guess-ti-mate’ where your child fits according to their aquatic skills thus far.  If your child has had no previous swim instruction, your child would fall into either a Water Babies class or a Guppy class, depending on their age.

Please fill out all columns in the ‘Swim Registration’’ in order to help assess where he/she should start this season for optimum success.  I will reach out to you in the order of entries on the below mentioned spreadsheet.  Once we have connected, you will print the attached Swim Release, and return it to Linda Brown: 804 Comstock Rd.  Hollister with a $20.00 non-refundable deposit for each week you reserve per child. You will have 10 days to get paperwork and deposits to me or risk losing their spots.  Please don’t get discouraged if it takes 24 hours to get back to you.  You will not lose your place in the registration of your swimmer! Please be aware that learning to swim saves lives, and may be scary to some children initially.  I will do everything I can to make them feel comfortable while moving forward with the goal of guiding all the children to safe aquatic skills.  I assure you, they do get through their fears, so we must allow them to see it through! If your child does not enter the water at any time during their designated swim time, you are financially responsible for payment for the entire week, regardless. Payment for the week is due on the Monday your child is to start each week.

Thank you!

Linda Brown

Water Babies:

This class is designed to be a bridging to swimming.  The ideal age range for this group of youngsters is 0-2.5 years.  This should be a relatively relaxed class of fun, games and songs with aquatic movement.  When youngsters are introduced to larger bodies of water (not bath tubs) and cooler temps (84-90 degrees), it can be stressful for this young set.  For their future success, we want them to get comfortable in a large body of water. This is the opportune time for toddlers to learn how to differentiate between inhaling air versus ingesting water, as this may prevent Secondary or dry drowning.  It is a great starting point!  In this class, our littles are not ready to be separated from the comfort of a loving adult in their life, therefore, YOU will jump in with them! A swim diaper is required.

This class runs M-TH up to 30 minutes at a cost of            $80.00

Guppy:

This is my beginner level, where we work on our floats, start the roll-over, learn the tilt-head breathing, which is the correct breathing technique for the Freestyle in the Goldfish level. We will learn the proper head position for a successful prone glide, which is the prelude to any prone stroke. In addition,  we work on our full-flutter kicks on our bellies and our backs, which we will build on in our Goldfish level, as well. This level is suggested for children ages 2.5 and older.

This class runs M-Th, 40 minutes $90.00

Goldfish:

This is where stroking begins!  At this level, we will build the Freestyle and Back Crawl.  We will continue with our floats as a warm up, as well as the roll-over, which saves lives.  Keep in mind that accomplishing the tilt-head breathing while stroking is the biggest challenge at this level, as it requires good neck muscles in order to turn one’s head on the water in a prone position.  Alternatively, the Otter-roll will be taught and demonstrated, in order to prevent a bad habit of raising their head forward for breathing.  The optimal goal is efficiently performing the tilt-head breathing while coordinating the stroke, as well as maintaining a back position independently while coordinating the Back Crawl!

This class is M-TH, 40 minutes $90.00

Angelfish:

At this level, your child will be building the Breast Stroke as well as the Elementary Backstroke. The Breast Stroke will require a little more coordination.  For this reason, we will start with the Frog leg kicks and breathing technique with the kickboard, which differs from the tilt-head breathing we accomplished in the Goldfish level.  Once we have the frog legs coordinated, we will add the arms to it, before bringing the practiced breathing technique into play for the completion of the stroke.  With the Elementary Backstroke, our legs and arms are making the same motion as one another simultaneously, and due to being on our back, there is no breathing technique to contend with, making this stroke an easier one to accomplish.  Don’t underestimate this stroke however, as it will aid your child when stressed in the water.

This class runs M-Th, 40 minutes $90.00

Sea Ray:

By now, you may notice your kiddos are becoming much stronger swimmers with a tad more confidence!  Hopefully, they are also developing a love for the sport of swimming!  At this level, we begin the coordination of the Side Stroke (known as the relaxing stroke as well as the rescue stroke) and the Butterfly!  As with all classes, we warm up with our floats and roll-over, as my goal is to reiterate the importance of resting on their back in a water emergency!  Once your child has demonstrated the coordinated technique of these strokes, they will become Dolphins!

This class runs 40 minutes, M-TH $90.00

Dolphin:

We’ve arrived!  If your child didn’t already feel the confidence, they will gain it here! At this point, I am no longer in the water while your child swims.  This becomes an eye opener for you as their parent to realize your child’s aquatic abilities for future swim socials, water park visits, and just swimming in your backyard, as you may hope to sit poolside! At this level, your child will be swimming the length of the pool.

We work on the timing and enhancement of all our strokes.  We learn diving, treading water, and work daily on building our individual lung capacity.  We also learn the competitive swim turn, in the event they are WAVEring on competing on a swim team. While I am above the water, I can better see what they are doing under the water, to best coach them in efficiency.

This level is 50 minutes, M-Th $90.00

Water Safety & Rescue:

This is where you, the parent, gains confidence in your child’s water survival abilities and knowledge, and this is where they become Water Safe! Water Smart! kids.  This course will challenge your off-spring both intellectually and physically.  We start the day off in a workbook, which they will keep as a reference guide.  The first part is focused on water safety, where we cover the breakdown of sunscreens, hair, eyes and skin protection.  We move into our approach of different bodies of water, covering swimming pools, rivers, lakes, boating and the ocean, and discuss the potential dangers of different bodies of water, and how to better their chances of survival in a volatile situation.  We discuss different kinds of drownings, what they look like and problem solve how they could have been prevented, etc… We learn about spinal cord injuries and how prevalent they are around water, as well as how to prevent one from happening to ourselves.  Part two focuses on water rescue, which includes identifying two different kinds of drowning victims and how to approach each scenario while maintaining their own safety. We also cover Dry drowning and Secondary drowning. After starting in the workbook, we move into the pool, where we first work on our strokes each day, and then take what we have discussed in the workbook and put them to the physical test in the water.  Each participant earns points throughout the week (M-F), and there is a written test on Friday.  The top scorer will be acknowledged, and be given the opportunity to volunteer as my assistant the following summer (for Water Safety & Rescue) with a gift of $100.00 towards their future! This course is offered once each summer. Congratulations goes out to Brandon Baptiste for his top score last summer!

This course runs M-F, 3 hours per day $300.00

Prerequisite: Must be a Dolphin swimmer and a ‘beginning 3rd grade reader’.

All Water Safety & Rescue participants are given the opportunity to become CPR Certified at a discounted rate of $65.00 following Water Safety & Rescue.  This certification is good for 2 years.  Your child must be able to compress deep enough in order to be certified, and a date will be set up at the time of their WS&R course.
